JACKIE NOTT! - Congratulations Jackie!, you are the winner of a $250.00 gift certificate good for use at the LUDWIG SHOP. It was a really hard choice to pick the winner since there were so many interesting submissions, but once we had a look at all of them together Jackie’s really stood out as the most creative of the bunch. In her email she mentioned that she was so inspired by the Ludwig van Beethoven graphic that she did one of Tchaikovsky too! - well these are really cool. I like the way they kind of look like playing cards, and the color pallete used is really nice. Be on the lookout for a semblance of this graphic on a LUDWIG t-shirt in the coming season. last sunday i was riding my bike and stopped because the wind was blowing against me and i was out of breath. i heard a kitten cry so i looked around and saw a baby calico kitten in the middle of the highway that runs through my town. cars were driving by it and over it. when i got to the cat i saw that it was dragging its back legs. i picked it up and waited for a ride to take her home. since it was sunday no vet places were open so we called animal control. while we waited for them to call back we noticed that it looked like someone had burned off her whiskers and there was no blood or broken skin that we could see on her legs. you could tell that from her lower back down she was paralyzed and she couldn't control going to the bathroom, but she was strong and drug herself around with her front paws. animal control called back and said that they didn't deal with cats, and that we should "put it back" where we found it and "let nature run its course."
i am pretty sure that nature doesnt involve the use of lighters, cruel hands, and automobile tires. my room mate was going to kansas city that night, so she took the kitten up there to her vet. the vet said she had massive internal damage and a pad onher foot at been ripped off. she had to be put to sleep.
yesterday i was dropping off a cd with the CPS brochure on it and as I was walking into the counseling center, I heard a flapping and fluttering noise. i looked down and saw a small sparrow glued down to a bug trap. i got closer and looked, and the trap was for catching snakes and mice, and whoever put it down didnt even bother to fold it. the bird was frantic and had it's chest, right wing, and feet stuck to the glue. i went inside to tel someone, and the first person i spoke to said to just leave it there. i couldn't beleive it so i went down all teh halls asking anyone in an office for assistance. i found an office that got me some gloves from a janitor's office. i picked the bird and trap up and set it in the grass. i put my gloved thumb on the trap to see just how sticky it was, and i had to pull with al my force to remove it. i knew that if i pulled on the bird i would rip its wing or legs or chest off. i didn't even try to pull the bird off so i instead walked down to the science building, found the biology department, and knocked on the door. luckily someone was in there and i showed him the bird, told him my dilema and he said that the bird person wasn't there, but he could break the bird's neck so that it wouldnt suffer. i told him to just do whatever he thought was best since he appreciated life.

spread for a travel magazine. in the city of sao paulo all forms of advertisement have been banned. there are some pretty amazing pictures of that on Tony de Marco's flickr site.

this is still in process. we have to redo a book cover, but it HAS to be a paper jacket for a hardback book. this is the first stage of sketching, scanning, and vectorizing (is that a word?).

i am taking publication design right now. this was the first assignment. we had to use the same pictures in three "different types" of magazine flavors. nothing too fabtab here.

this is a brochure for the Counseling and Psychological Services center located on my campus. i have been told by one of the lead designers of the university that the university's colors are "not baby blue or pink" and that is an inappropriate and bad design. he wants the brochure to be red, black, and standard. we shall see if it is printed!

Take Back The Night

I helped organize an event on my university campus, called Take Back The Night. I had the opportunity to design the flyers and tshirts for the event, and I was also a speaker at it, sharing my story. We weren't expected many people, and thought we were crazy to have ordered 100 shirts to hand out for free. I was thinking thatwe would have tons of shirts left. We had almost TWO HUNDRED people show up. We actually ran out of shirts. It was so amazing. People wrote why they were there on notecards and we had The Current (an anti violence theatrical group) read them outloud from within the crowd. It was amazing. There were so many survivors. We walked, chanted, and spoke all around the campus in a big herd of pink shirts. We also wrote all over the front of the campus union in chalk-- reasons why were were walking, why rape is terrible, and just anything and everything we could to break the silence. I just can't even begin to explain to you the empowerment I felt being there with nearly 200 people that cared about these issues. Not only that, but there were at least 10 survivors that made themselves known through notecards and to have an event that is all about THEM I can only imagine what a positive feeling that must have envoked inside of them. We were able to give a voice to people that otherwise might never have had one. It was so amazing, and I can't say that enough. All of the hours upon hours upon hours I spent brainstorming, designing 6 different shirts, narrowing down colors, finding a printer, setting up for print, making flyers, printing flyers, flyering the school, and outlining a speech I never once imagined that the product would be so wonderful. I already want to start planning an event for the next semester. There were so many people that loved the shirts I made or wanted to be there 40 minutes early just to get the "cool" shirt that I made. I made a cool shirt that is about nothing but ending sexual assault, partner violence, and stalking. 200 people were wearing those shirts. I just can't put into the words the feeling I had in seeing my art on 200 people that care about survivors or on survivors themselves. Wow. I will never forget that.

who really cares? what a question. i mean who really cares about rape, about greed, about human trafficking, about going on vacation with fake families to fake foreign countries. people don't have health insurance and the people with it don't want everyone to have it because then they won't have the best insurance. i say fuck that. not everyone can have the best so we might as well all have something. who says you are entitled to having everything comfy just because you are you? what did you do other than being born into or marrying into or stumbling into success? people are going to disney land and cancun pretending to be in a real place, splurging money, buying things to remind themselves of their trip. if you have to buy all of your memories you won't remember any of them other than the fact that you got off when the credit card slid or when you paid with the fake monopoly money. we live in such a world of excess it makes me want to vomit. i see the things some people have, and i see the things that i have. i just dont know. we need to live life for other people. the people we remember are the ones that did something good--did something for someone else. find a cause. embrace it. dont idolize the people that do it. become one of them. please try to help someone. anyone. all we are are memories. you, me, the person you just talked to. all your family and friends are is a memory. we are a happy warm spot in the brain. do some good and become a warm spot that carries on through many people for many years. if you come and go and dont make any memories then what was the point in you existing. so you could go to disneyland and have health insurance and go to church and cheer on reality tv. there is so much out there and so many people just don't give a fuck because they have satellite tv and mcdonalds drive thrus. they do their charity work for 4 hours out of every leap year and call it good and holy.
just listen to inner city blues and see how he is talking about us today. it isnt stopping it is growing. "god knows where we are headed"
every great nation falls and we are not that great.
oil is our economy.
oil is our transportation.
oil is our buildings infrastructure.
oil is the clothes that we wear.
oil are the pills we take to counteract the pills that we dont know why we take.
we have the patriot act, wire tapping, SECURE driver's licenses that only "terrorists, felons, and ILLEGALS" wouldn't want.
we have american idol telling us what to watch and what to like.
we are like mindless drones
losing our jobs to machines that can do it better because we dont need good salesman because we treat them like animals.
in the countryside you wave at people you see or stop and talk if you passby, yet we get in the city and its like we arent even people. why should you not stop and acknowledge that someone is human.

flowers that i always thought i saw but never could touch. they were always at my fingertip. where can i find some to keep for always?

american idol's format is exactly like the format of america's funniest home video. the people in the crowd are on there to be on camera. they all dress nice and clap when they are supposed to clap because they want the people that are like them to like them so of course they need to look great and excited on tv. the contestants on here are totally non threatening and cookie cuttered. they sing songs that we all already really like so there is no fear of a style or rejected approach to making music. if we like a song someone sings and think they are ok or have a certain trait that is similar to you then you will want them. they involve the audience as people that are actually determining the show so you aren't just the audience you are part of the show as well. then the people at home vote for the biggest portion of votes so you at home are almost more important than the people in the audience. america's funniest home videos just didn't tap into the having those at home call in. even if the person you like gets kicked off then you have to keep watching because you invested so much time and want to know who wins so you pick a next favorite and after hoping and rooting for them you soon forget about the previous favorite until in the end the favorite is picked based on majority so then the most people are happy and people will want to buy the cd especially if they invested so many hours into this becoming the end result. the people that viewers are tuning in to watch arent really the contestants but rather the judges that people have grown to have deep feelings about whether for the good the bad or the indifferent. so each year we know they will be on there with the same types of comments. look how white their teeth are. then you repeat next year and everyone forgets who america's idol was last year. america's funniest home video uses a word that isnt even really a word and american idol uses someone that i surely hope is not an idol of all americans.
after i thought all of this at a chinese restaraunt, guess what show came on right after on the same channel? america's funniest home videos. it's amazing how easily we are entertained.
